Josef Mengele was born on March 16, 1911, in Günzburg, Germany. His father, Karl Mengele, was a manufacturer of farming tools. He went to the University of Munich and received a Ph.D. in physical antropology in 1935. In 1937, he worked with Dr. Otmar von Verschuer at the Institute for Hereditary Biology and Racial Hygiene in Frankfurt. Dr. von Verschuer was well known for his research with twins. Mengele also joined the Nazi party in 1937(Josef Mengele).
After being drafted into the army in 1940, he worked his way up through the German military ranks as a medical physician. His medical degree allowed him to study and have access to captives in the German concentration camps. This also gave him the power to conduct brutal experiments against the prisoners. His main interest was in working with genetics and hereditary diseases, particularly with twins. The experiments involved the mutilation and death of his experimentees. He gathered body parts, including eyes, in order to study pigmentation and the resistance of various diseases among Jewish people. He became known as the "Angel of Death" at Auschwitz.

Josef eventually had to flee the country because he was wanted by the police. Over time he moved around South America, and ended up in Brazil. When he was there, Mengele had a stroke and drowned in the water. He was buried in Brazil under a false name, but they later exumed his body and discovered his true identity. He was able to escape capture for 34 years (Josef Mengele).
